Critique of the United States in the Work of West German Intellectuals in the Post-War Period
Kropáčková, Kristina ; Hornát, Jan (advisor) ; Szobi, Pavel (referee)
This thesis examines postwar criticism of the United States in the writings of four West German intellectuals: Hans Werner Richter, Karl Barth, Ernst von Salomon, and Leo L. Matthias. It views their reflection in the context of the concept of the "third way," the search for an alternative solution to Germany's political and economic heading after World War II, which included a reflection on the United States. The thesis highlights the fact that despite the positive attitude of the political leadership towards the United States, especially in the Westbindung policy of German Chancellor Konrad Adenauer, a critical attitude towards the United States can be observed in intellectual circles, both among left and right-wing individuals. The aim of this paper is to identify the extent of this critical debate. Thus, using the methods of intellectual history, the central themes that selected intellectuals have addressed in their critique are successively identified. The thesis is divided into five chapters. The first four discuss the relationship of each intellectual to the United States in the period 1945-1955. The fifth chapter summarizes the main findings and compares the differences and similarities in the approaches of the intellectuals examined.
Pasokification - the decline of traditional and social democratic parties after the Great Recession
Ročárek, Adam ; Stauber, Jakub (advisor) ; Perottino, Michel (referee)
This bachelor's thesis is concerned with Pasokification, a concurrent decline of traditional centre-left parties in Europe and rise of alternative parties after the Great Recession of 2008. The theoretic part of the thesis analyses the status of these parties prior to their decline, their politics, way of governing, evolution and reforms which the parties embraced prior to their decline. The practical part analyses the decline itself, and how its tied to parties' politics and decisions prior to it. It also analyses the new, alternative parties, which have begun to occupy the space previously dominated by moderate, traditional parties. By comparison between the parties that successfully staved off Pasokification, and parties that declined into political irrelevance, and by comparison between the traditional and alternative parties, this thesis pinpoints the reasons for the decline. By analysing the electoral successes of the traditional and alternative parties, the thesis resolves the relationship between the two, discovering whether the rise of alternative parties is the reason for the decline, or a result of it. The same hypotheses are used for the 6 analysed states, and as such the thesis analyses whether the hypotheses are applicable to the wide trend of the European left.

Comparing the Social Democratic Party of Croatia with the Socialist Party of Serbia and positioning them within the social-democratic framework in the years 2000-2016
Elčić, Sandro ; Kubát, Michal (advisor) ; Žíla, Ondřej (referee)
This thesis is a comparative case study of two successor communist parties of the League of Communists of Yugoslavia, Social democratic party of Croatia (Socijaldemokratska partija Hrvatske - SDP) and Socialist party of Serbia (Socijalistička partija Srbije - SPS) between years 2000 and 2016. In the beginning we define ideal types of social democracy that are: old left, new left and third way. While the old left is based mainly on keynesian approaches to economy, new left is focused mainly on post-materialistic values such as environmentalism, gender equality, pacifism etc. Third way is an attempt of synthesis of former two types with neoliberal economic approach. First part of the analysis is a short introduction to historical contexts in the analysed period. Then we analyse program documents, speeches and interviews of leaders of both parties, so we can classify them according to above mentioned types of social democracy. In the end we analyse the practically applied politics in periods when the parties were taking part on the national governments. Finally we summarize the results of the thesis as follows: In the beginning of the analysed period SPS can be classified as mostly old left both in economical and post-materialistic views. The SPS has gone through much larger change in its programmatic...

Prevalence of Etatism in the 20th-Century Great Britain
Erva, Martin ; Kovář, Martin (advisor) ; Tajovský, Ladislav (referee) ; Soukup, Jaromír (referee)
The United Kingdom is imprinted in our historical memory as the birthplace of modern democracy, the rule of law and respect to private ownership. However, this memory reflects deep history of the 19th century rather than the present state of affairs. The English like other developed nations have acquired the policy of state interventions, nationalization of private enterprise for a compensation, fight against the economic cycle in an unprecedented consensus. Many of the contemporaries assess England through the prism of Margaret Thatcher, however, as demonstrated in this work, her right-winged policy proved an exception to the Conservative Party's rule. Historiography ascribes the reasons of the situation especially to the Labour Party. A number of history works limits the causality of the state growth to the onset of the Laborites. It is apparent, however, that the search for the reasons of the state of affairs needs to quest much deeper in history. Despite its name, the Liberal Party is an institution with a long tradition of state-positive thinking. It was the new Radical Liberals who arrived with a "ransom" theory as well as the program of urban socialism, which does not seem to be a symptom of the laissez faire era in the today's regulated world of private waterworks, gas and electric power...
